The iPhone has already surpassed other cameras on photo-sharing sites like Flickr, and iOS 5 and the next generation Apple iPhone are sure to accelerate this trend in the fall. Many improvements are in the works for iPhone photography in the next generation firmware.

Not only this, but the iPhone 5 hardware will likely include an 8 megapixel sensor from suppliers OmniVision and Sony. So what improvements have already been seen in the beta versions of iOS 5? Read on for a complete list.

Taking Photos
1. As Apple has already announced, the Camera app in iOS 5 will utilize the volume-up button as a shutter release button to take photos. No more tapping the screen to shoot a picture.

2. Lock screen access will make it possible to quickly open the Camera app from the lock screen. CameraLock makes this possible now if your iPhone is jailbroken.

3. Separate Video icon provides one-touch access to videos apart from still camera.

4. Camera zoom no longer requires the slider. Pinch-and-zoom gestures when shooting a photo will zoom the field of view.

5. Holding down on the screen in the Camera app will lock auto focus and auto exposure while shooting. Currently a tap will refocus but these parameters are adjusted as subject moves or the camera pans.

6. Built-in camera grid provides guidelines for aligning the perfect shot.

Photo Management
7. Swipe left in the Camera app to reveal the Camera Roll.

8. Reorder photos directly in the Camera Roll.

9. iCloud syncs your Photo Stream across all iOS devices automatically.

10. Photo albums can be created and managed on the iPhone. Right now a computer is required to create photo albums which can be synced later.

Photo Editing
11. Photo editing tools will be added including rotation adjustment and red-eye removal.

12. Photos can be cropped and colors enhanced directly on the iPhone (these two features only supported on the iPhone 4 and later).

As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you. iPhone owners are going to have even more reasons to snap photos with their mobile devices when iOS 5 and the next generation iPhone are released later this year. See more iOS 5 features Apple didn’t bother to mention.
