We recently heard some murmurings coming out of China about the possibility of a new development team releasing a new SIM interposer solution similar to the popular Gevey SIM which would provide 4S users with that elusive unlock, but that so far hasn’t come to fruition. If the recent video release on YouTube from the guys over at ApplenBerry.com is to be believed, it would seem that the release of the new Gevey Ultra S will eventually provide unlock satisfaction to those owners of a GSM iPhone 4S.

The attached video demonstrates the team installing a SIM card into an iPhone 4S using the new Gevey Ultra S interposer which allows previously not available network connections to be made on an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 with modem firmware versions 1.0.11, 1.0.13 and 1.0.14. The Gevey Ultra S is being advertised as a true plug and play SIM-unlocking interposer which is compatible with all GSM iPhone 4S devices. The tool has a lower power consumption that previous offerings and requires to cutting of the SIM or any physical modifications.

Users who have been waiting for this release can head on over to the Ultra S page which is currently available for pre orders with expected dispatch dates between the 3rd and 7th March. As always, due to the relatively high price tag (currently showing a pre order price of $54.99) associated with this unlock solution we would recommend exercising extreme caution when purchasing or waiting until the unlock has been proven to work for the masses.

Carriers have had their customers over a metaphorical barrel for years, with over-priced SMS messages chief amongst the methods that have seen our cellular providers take us to the cleaners on regular occasions. The SMS example is made even more galling when you take into consideration how little data is used by each message.

But now there is an almighty fight back underway, with carriers finding themselves increasingly cut out of the whole messaging system, where third parties are basically bypassing the SMS money pit using the carriers’ own data networks against them.

The fight back is being led by the likes if RIM with its BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM as all the cool kids are calling it. By using data networks to send instant messages between BlackBerry users, RIM bypassed the carriers in a way that saw SMS all-but made obsolete.

Now Apple is very much in the same game, with iMessage following much the same playbook – sorry, that was a pun I couldn’t avoid – as RIM. iMessage is available on all iOS devices, making it a true SMS replacement so long as all your friends have iOS devices which, let’s be honest, they probably do.

But wait, there’s more!

Apple is on the verge of dropping the other shoe. When the latest version of [Mac] OS X, due for release during the summer of 2012, Apple will make iMessage a part of the desktop experience. By offering something that not even the incumbent SMS can offer and something beyond existing technology like BBM, iMessage offers something that isn’t yet available unless you resort to Gtalk, AIM or another chat protocol that requires another third party app and that’s ubiquitous instant messaging.

Start a conversation on your iPhone, continue it on your Mac when you return home. Head up to bed and take your iPad? No problem, your iMessages go with you. It’s seamless, or at least it will be once a few bugs have been worked out of the current beta software, and it means that SMS is getting left behind in the technology stakes. By making iMessage offer something that gives users a real reason to switch it on, Apple has given those same users another reason to step away from SMS.

Throw in Skype for calls and FaceTime for video chats, and carriers will soon be boiled down to what they should have been all along – dumb pipes.

I’ve been using OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion for a few days now, and I’ll be putting it through its paces over the next week or so too. Keep it here for my thoughts on the major changes and new features after some more testing later in the week.

As the release of the next-generation iPad approaches, we’ve discovered some intriguing photos on a Chinese forum of an apparent iPad Retina Display production line. The forum posting contains some blurry spy shots of what it is calling the iPad 3′s 2048 x 1536 display, but perhaps more interestingly, has a photo of packed up Retina Displays. These boxes are likely of Retina Displays that are prepared to be shipped off to Apple’s final product assembly lines. Interestingly, the forum claims these displays are made by Samsung (machine translated):

Radiant internal, iPad3 screen code J2, and these products are the name of the logo of Samsung Electronics, and even sealed box tape has the logo of Samsung Electronics. After the product is packaged, will pass through customs shipped to South Korea’s Samsung headquarters, provided by Samsung to the Apple!

The forum posting also sheds some light on the security that surrounds Apple component supplier production lines. The forum says security measures are tight, so the photos are bad quality, but according to people within the plant, the iPad 3 will have a design similar to the iPad 2. This is something we’ve heard many times before (machine translated):

Have been identified, Radiant Opto-Electronics Wujiang plant a total of four iPad3 real machine security measures are too tight, you can not take to iPad3 photos carefully observed, but, according to broke people, iPad3 appearance and iPad2 basically the same, only different iPad3 positive border than iPad2 much narrower, and the volume keys iPad3 no!

The forum also says the plant is located in the Wujiang City, Radiant Opto-Electronics LCM sector. After the break, we have posted a gallery of several purported spy shots of the Samsung iPad 3 display and the production line:

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion will be offered exclusively through the App Store, familiar territory for Apple since OS X Lion was provided the same way. Thankfully it’s still possible to create a bootable OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion installer from any USB drive, be it a flash key or external hard drive.

By creating a bootable install drive, you can perform clean OS X 10.8 installs, install it on separate partitions, and install OS X Mountain Lion on Macs that don’t have internet connections. We’ll walk through the process here, but don’t forget to check OS X 10.8 system requirements for the destination Mac before beginning.
If you already have the Mac OS X Mountain Lion install DMG extracted, skip this first set of steps and jump directly to making the bootable drive below.

Download OS X Mountain Lion and Extract the DMG File

Download OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

Go to the /Applications/ directory and right-click on “Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion.app” selecting “Show Package Contents”

Open the “Contents” directory and then open “SharedSupport”, looking for a file named “InstallESD.dmg”

Double-click on InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop

Make the OS X Mountain Lion Install Drive

Launch Disk utility and connect a USB drive to the Mac

Select the USB drive from the left menu and click on “Erase” tab, choose “Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)” as the format, then click on the “Erase” button in the corner

Now select the formatted USB drive from the left side and click on the “Restore” tab

Drag the previously mounted “Mac OS X Install ESD” image into the “Source” section

Drag the formatted partition to the “Destination” section, then click on “Restore”

Confirm that the USB drive will lose it’s data and enter the Admin password when asked

Disk Utility will now create a bootable OS X Mountain Lion installer drive out of USB drive using the disk image, this can take a little while depending on how fast the drive and Mac are but 20-30 minutes isn’t unusual.

When finished, reboot the Mac and hold down the Option key to bring up the boot menu:

Select the orange “Mac OS X” option and you will boot into the OS X Mountain Lion installer, from here installation is the same as normal. Click on Continue, select the destination drive, and install.

There has been much talk over the last couple of months regarding Apple’s next tablet offering, in particular whether it will finally pack an uber-sharp Retina display.

To some, it’s been long overdue, and when the iPad 2 arrived last March, many consumers were left disappointed by the lack of LCD improvement, worsened still by the fact that most had become accustomed to the crisp visuals of the iPhone 4.

There have been many alleged leaks of the new display, but most came from unreputable sources and didn’t come with any form of verification. Now, though, MacRumors has gotten hold of a real iPad 3 screen and placed it under scrutiny by means of a microscope.

As you’d expect, it’s physically similar to the iPad 2′s screen, measuring in at 9.7″ and looks exactly the same to the naked eye. But after taking a closer look, MacRumors has confirmed the pixels are one quarter the size of the current offering.

Since MacRumors only obtained the screen itself, there was no way of firing it up, thus taking photos of the new screen proved neigh-on impossible. Even so, we regard MacRumors as a more than reliable outlet, and reporter Eric Slivka noted that even under basic lighting, one can make out the pixel improvement on the display, manufactured by Sharp.

The above diagram depicts a small (2×2) snippet of pixels from the iPad 2, compared with the same area on the new display and, as you can see, the resolution is doubled in each direction (4×4), meaning the total number of pixels on the iPad 3 will quadruple, boasting a 2048×1536 resolution.

Aside from being a great music player, iTunes is an integral part of an iPhone, iPad and iPod user’s digital life.

This is all well and good if you’re on iOS of course, allowing the most harmonious of synchronization; and as of iOS 5 – wirelessly so – providing your iDevice is Wi-Fi compatible.

In true Cupertino fashion, though, unless you’re in the iClub in terms of portable gizmos, your device will not be enjoying any iTunes loving in the near future.

Well actually, it might. A new app called Airbind allows you to sync your Android with iTunes, and although many Droidsters will – like their iOS counterparts – have a partisan affinity to their tooth-rotting Google gadget, the ease in which digital content can be obtained from iTunes might just see you ditch the likes of Winamp for good.

As per the developer:

Storing all of your DRM free media on your SD card, Airbind allows you to take your media with you. It will even auto-sync with your iTunes whenever your PC/Mac and android device are on the same network.

With Apple currently in the process of calling Google out (albeit via Samsung), the timing of this app’s release may seem a little ironic. Still, since there’s a snowball in hell’s chance of such compatibility ever coming as standard (unless one company were to buy-out the other, of course), Airbind serves as the perfect excuse to infiltrate enemy lines.

The app is completely free, and works with both Windows and Mac. You’ll need to get hold of the partnering desktop utility – both of which are linked to at the bottom of this post – as well as the Android client, which is also just a short scroll down the page.

These are impressions after installation:
remember that you can download Mountain osx lion

The ease of use here is just off the charts — by using your Apple ID, all of your messages will instantly and effortlessly flow from your iPhone to iPad to iPod touch to computers, keeping on-going conversations in sync no matter what device you have with you. This is a huge game-changer for instant communication in my book. Apple has said that over 26 billion iMessages were sent since its introduction in iOS 5. Add in delivery and read receipts, photo and file sending, and the over 100mm people who use iMessage, and you have a major network for instant sharing that just works.

One thing that I’d like Apple to solve on the computer with Messages, though, is checking to see what people in my contacts have an Apple ID or phone number and not showing me the rest of their contact information. Since you can only chat with an iPhone user or Apple ID in iMessage, it doesn’t make much sense to show me a contact’s secondary numbers or email addresses.

FaceTime is integrated into the main Messages window for whomever you’re in a conversation with, which is a clean way to bridge these two services into one. If you’re on OS X 10.7 Lion, you won’t even have to wait until the summer to start using Messages, as Apple has released it as a public beta that’s available for download now.

Apple has integrated iCloud into the foundation of OS X 10.8. When you first power on the computer, you’re greeted with a sign-in window for your Apple ID. After you sign in, iCloud downloads your settings and sets up most of your computer for you, automatically. This includes your mail, contacts, calendar, reminders, notes, messages, bookmarks and more.

Opening the iCloud preferences shows you just how much syncing and data Apple is handling so you don’t have to worry about it — Back to my Mac, Find my Mac, Photo Stream and of course, the aforementioned as well. I still don’t see a way to integrate iCloud with Apple’s iWork suite, but this is obviously coming very soon.

This makes me so, so happy. I’ve hated Growl since its inception, mainly because it wasn’t ever executed properly. Notification Center is a wonderful place to see all of your notifications and alerts, including the addition of banner alerts that appear on the right side of your display. You can fine tune these just like you can on iOS by going into the Notifications panel in your settings and choosing whether to badge apps, what kind of alert you want, how many alerts for a specific app to show and more granular controls.

Introduced with Notification Center is a new two-finger gesture to bring up your notifications, and it’s a two-finger swipe from the edge of the trackpad from right to left. This is a bit cumbersome on a Magic Trackpad because you have to start exactly where the surface starts, unlike on a MacBook Air or Pro where there’s a surface next to the trackpad area.

Apple has an API for Mac Apps that want to appear in Notification Center, so expect almost every one of your favorite app to be compatible. For now, Mail, Messages, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Mac App Store and Safari will appear in Notification Center.

Game Center is something else that feels big to me. The Mac was once a platform that was terrible for gamers. With the introduction, capability, and popularity of iOS, however, Apple’s devices have been the number one place for console-quality games in the past few years. It’s now translating to the Mac. Not only can you use Game Center how you would on iOS — yes, your friends are here, game recommendations are here, and your achievements are here — but you can also play multiplayer and turn-based games from your Mac with someone else on an iPhone or iPad. That’s big.

Address Book and iCal are gone, replaced with Contacts and Calendar just like on iOS. These apps are mostly identical to the apps they replace aside from their new names, but there is a level of iCloud integration that was missing before. Whatever is on your iOS device will be on your Mac now in Reminders and Notes, and the Notes app also features some awesome capabilities like in-line photos, bulleted lists, hyperlinked URLs, customizable fonts and other enhancements. Reminders also syncs with your iOS devices, though Reminders with locations don’t seem to display properly on the Mac at this point.

Another huge addition to the Mac is AirPlay. This allows you to send your video and audio content directly from your computer to a TV or projector. Imagine just showing up to a conference room with your MacBook Air and instantly beaming your Keynote presentation wirelessly to a display, or grabbing your laptop while you’re on your sofa and showing off a new home video to friends on your TV. You can push your content from your Mac to a TV, and you can also use AirPlay Mirroring just as you can on your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, turning the TV into your monitor on your Mac — wirelessly.

There’s a lot more to OS X 10.8 then what I covered above. For example, there’s now system-level sharing going on, called Share Sheet. It’s contextual based on the app you are in, and this is most likely a sign of what’s to come in iOS 6 if I had to bet — a system-integrated way of sharing from one app to other services in iOS.

Safari has improved to the point where I’m going to try to make it my default browser. It’s buttery smooth, the ability to type a URL and search from one unified bar is a needed improvement, and I love how it grays out all of the URL noise, just leaving the base URL whole. Reader has moved to a permanent place on the right side of the browser bar, and using Safari just makes browsing the Internet feel like a different experience than just pulling up Web pages. It feels very iOS-like, especially with the Magic Trackpad — something Apple was obviously aiming for.

Another addition in OS X 10.8 is the fact that the Mac App Store now handles all of your system updates. These updates will even appear in Notification Center now. I was able to update three different parts of the system using just the App Store.

Apple has also introduced a way to try and prevent any bad apps from running on the Mac with GateKeeper. This setting lets you choose whether to accept apps downloaded only from the App Store (Apple has to approve every app before it’s available here), apps from the App Store and verified developers (developers will be able to sign apps with a unique identifier, and Apple would be able to revoke this in case of any nefarious happenings), or apps from anywhere and everywhere. This would also be a much-welcome and much-awaited feature for iOS, if that’s ever an option down the road.
